Throughout 2012 the Ohio Geological Survey will celebrate its 175th anniversary as a public agency and scientific organization. Since it was first authorized by the Ohio legislature on March 27, 1837, the Survey has been dedicated to serving Ohioans by researching and mapping the state’s geology to promote responsible management of its energy and mineral resources. From the very first reports produced by William Williams Mather, the first State Geologist of Ohio, to modern digital, print-on-demand, and interactive maps, the Survey has provided the information and data needed by Ohio’s citizens, industry, and government to make wise decisions about land use and development, environmental protection, and mitigation of geologic hazards.
To celebrate this milestone year, the Survey has planned several promotions to educate citizens about the agency’s past, present, and future. First, the Survey has created a special logo to commemorate the anniversary. The logo will appear on every web page and all publications produced by the Survey in 2012. Also included in the celebration is a new feature on our website—an interactive timeline complete with links, images, maps, and more to help illustrate the Survey’s history from its founding in 1837 through today. Staff members will be attending and giving talks at several events throughout the state in 2012, including the GSA North-Central Section annual meeting, to be held in April in Dayton, Ohio. Other activities include a reception to be held at the H. R. Collins Laboratory this summer; special publications; social media interaction with the public via Facebook, such as sharing historic and geologic photos from the Survey archives; and much more.
