Stormwater Management – Success Story

Protecting Ohio’s water resources with cost-effective stormwater practices

Pervious Pavement Practice

This new practice, developed by the Stormwater Management Program staff, is one of several planned practices designed to be more preventative by promoting greater infiltration of rainfall into the soil. The specification was written for inclusion in the Rainwater and Land Development manual and gives instruction regarding the design of pervious pavements as part of a stormwater management plan. Besides reducing the volume of runoff, pervious pavements also provide water quality treatment and have potential of decreasing the need for salt and other de-icing materials.

Providing Opportunities for Training

The Stormwater Management Program helps to organize and chair the Ohio Stormwater Conference. The last conference (the 3rd annual) gathered more than 420 people in Sandusky to hear speakers, compare notes and improve stormwater skills and knowledge. Participants in the 2-day conference represent many local and state government agencies, non-profit watershed groups and consulting firms. A growing strength of the event is that it draws speakers from many disciplines and roles from engineers, technicians, and planning officials to biologists, administrators and modelers. The conference moves each year to a different region of Ohio to promote local involvement. The Stormwater Management Program supports this conference by providing and organizing speakers, program materials and administrative assistance. It is just one of several training events that the SMP uses to support those engaged in development and local stormwater programs.
