2010 FFA Land and Soil Judging Career Development Event
Each year more than 3,000 students in Ohio participate in the “future farmers of America” Land and Soil Judging Career Development event. In preparation for the event, more than 250 teachers and instructors teach students how to navigate through and utilize official soils information. Students learn to make sound land use decisions and determine soils’ potential use and limitations for urban development, home sites and agricultural applications.
The contest also teaches participants to understand physical soil properties, classify land according to its capability, become acquainted with conservation practices and exercise proper stewardship of the land and soil.
Soil scientists work with SWCDs to select sites that have diverse soil conditions to allow for a broad educational experience. There are 10 district contests each year that rotate throughout regions of the state to highlight benchmark soils in Ohio. The highest placing students from the district contests move on to compete at the state contest.
