Salmons has greatly expanded his role from being the publications technical editor to many additional tasks, including helping to create and manage the Survey’s website content and participating in or directing numerous outreach and public relations activities. He is responsible for working with ODNR Office of Communications regarding news releases pertaining to the Survey. He also developed the Ohio Geology EXTRA section of the website as a way to help keep the public informed about research and activities at the Survey along with hot topics pertaining to Ohio’s geology. Chuck not only reviews publications and reports but also helps by editing grant proposals that are critical for funding the Survey.
“I love science, so it feels great to know that your work is respected by your peers and by an organization with such a storied history of scientific research in Ohio,” said Salmons, who was quite surprised upon receiving the award.
Survey Chief Larry Wickstrom presented Chuck with a plaque and certificate recognizing his achievement at the Survey’s annual winter meeting and awards ceremony. Salmons was chosen as the 2011 recipient by a special committee that reviewed nominations submitted by fellow staff members.
“Chuck is always eager to promote the Survey and take on new challenges,” said Chief Wickstrom. “He is a great role model for our other younger, newer employees.”
Chuck’s expanded role includes helping to promote, photograph, and provide written summaries and press releases on numerous field trips, conferences, and forums over the last few years. “He has endless ideas on how to promote the Survey and make it more relevant,” mentioned one of Salmons’ coworkers who had nominated him.
A native of the Columbus area, Chuck earned his B.A. in English from Otterbein College and an M.A. in English from Northern Michigan University. Before joining the Survey in February 2009, Chuck worked for McGraw-Hill Publishing and taught part time at Columbus State Community College.
