March 16, 2010—Next month, the Division of Geological Survey will hold two events at the Horace R. Collins Laboratory and Core Repository, in Delaware, as part of its continuing efforts to reach out to both industry and academia.

On April 20, in conjunction with the Ohio Geological Society and DLZ-Ohio, Inc the Survey will welcome engineering and geoscience professionals to explore the near-surface geology of central Ohio in a workshop entitled, “Central Ohio's Geology in Core and Outcrop.” Through hands-on exercises, attendees will have the opportunity to earn professional development hours while learning about numerous properties and economic uses for each mapped, geologic unit in the central Ohio region. The workshop is targeted at engineering and geoscience professionals—particularly entry-level geoscientists and engineers, geologists, and drillers—who work in central Ohio and want to gain knowledge on local geology.

Students, faculty, and staff members in geoscience programs at Ohio's colleges and universities will once again have the occasion to learn more about the Survey and its current programs at its second annual open house, to be held Saturday, April 24. Highlights include a seismic data acquisition demonstration, review of the Ohio Seismic Network, opportunities for one-on-one discussions, Q&A sessions, and much more.

Participants of both the core workshop and open-house events will have the unique opportunity to use and critique preliminary fact sheets for a future publication: Ohio’s Geology in Core and Outcrop–A Field Guide for Citizens and Environmental and Geotechnical Investigators.
