BOATING IN OHIO

Students write a special feature publication (with option to conduct a school survey) about boating opportunities in Ohio, including information about boating safety and how to respect others and the environment when boating.

ENVIRONMENTAL TALENT SEARCH

Students engage in roles as talent scouts to make recommendations of positions and employees for a new Conservation and Recreation Department in their area. They evaluate candidates based the job skills of the candidates and local needs in conservation and outdoor recreational activities.

GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGIES

Students work individually and with two other partners to investigate the uses of GPS and GIS. Their goal is to answer the overarching question, “How can geospatial technologies help us manage and preserve our natural resources?” Once students learn about these technologies, they assume the identity of a GIS professional and apply what you have learned to a situation in their local community.

Students write a special feature publication (with option to conduct a school survey) about “nature deficit disorder”? a recent phenomenon based on observations by environmental educators and others that most young people are not engaging with nature and therefore may not possess the same appreciation of nature as previous generations.

English Language Arts: Informational Literacy; Writing Process Skills.

SOIL & WATER: HUMAN IMPACT

Students will be observing the results of water quality test performed in Stark County Ohio. Their objective is to identify what test site is most suitable for supporting aquatic life. The factors that will be looked at in this investigation are farming, residential, and industrial regions that a selected river passes through. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate professional occupations in water quality management and gain science content knowledge to support the test results and interpretations.

STUDY THE UNIVERSE

Students investigate our moon and local environments to see if a small living creature that has been discovered in Navarre, Ohio, came from the moon (as several people have concluded) or just out of it’s normal local environment.
