A 200-acre beech/maple woods and rolling green hills are the backdrop for one of southwest Ohio’s best golf bargains - the 18-hole championship course at Hueston Woods State Park in Preble County.

The course is open all year, weather permitting, with a host of specials offered between April and October.

Players who have tackled the par-72 layout that stretches 7,044 yards say they have found it “well worth the travel time it takes to get there” and “a great course at a great price,” according to reviews posted on the Internet.

Pro shop manager Allen Ansorg said those comments are echoed by nearly every golfer on the course.

“We’re proud of our efforts to maintain a top-quality course that also offers a very affordable round of golf,” Ansorg said.

The signature 16th hole is a 165 carry over water that challenges novices and veterans alike. “This hole has more water than land,” Ansorg said. “It can be pretty intimidating.”

Equally intimidating are the 30 sand bunkers, four ponds and many mature trees that dot the course.

The popular Rewards Card encourages play Monday through Thursday in the season. Cardholders get one free round for every five played on those days. Another added-value incentive falls on every Tuesday, between April and October, when golfers pay just $16 for 18 holes. Both greens fees and cart fees are discounted after 3:30 p.m. seven days a week. Lessons can be arranged through the pro shop.

Both wildlife and wildflowers abound in the old-growth forest that borders the course. Some of the state’s oldest trees are found in the 200 acres of woodland, which has been designated a National Natural Landmark.
