Park Pals -- Spring/Summer 1999
Thanks...
In the last issue, we asked you to send us your stories and poems about the Marblehead Lighthouse. Wow! You did a great job! We would love to publish all of them, but there were just too many. Here are a few we chose to share.

Everyone who sent in one of these stories or poems has become an official Ohio State Parks Pal.

The Marblehead Lighthouse is our newest state park.
The light works at night so you can see in the dark.
It's on Lake Eire to the north of the state.
You'd better go see it; so first pick a date.
You can go in a boat or go in a car.
But either way, it's not very far.
Ohio has many things to do and to see.
They're all pretty cool. I think you'll agree.

-Janet Stoffel -- Lewisville, OH

Marblehead Lighthouse is nice and old,
I bet it gets cold!
But when it is night it leads
people with its light.
Although we fergot Wayfarin Willie,
Well he didn't eat his chilie and never
found the bright light.

-Jared Bell -- Waynesville, OH

Boating on Lake Erie
In the darkness of the night
Is really made much easier
Due to the Marblehead Light

Now if there was no lighthouse
To help guide me on my way
I could only do my boating
During the light of day

The building of the Marblehead Lighthouse
This is so mighty fine
Allows me to do my boating
Day and night at anytime.

-Ray Cunningham -- Brook Park, OH

The lightouse is a bright house,
The lighthouse is so tall
it reminds me of a long hall,
I'd like to go to the top
And watch ships pass by,
If I could reach the seagulls
as they fly by,
I would then reach the sky.

-Tim Monahan -- Galloway, OH

Me in my boat I can not find my way home
A very shiny light is what I'm looking for
Ready to lead my way
Brighten your light
Lead me home
Everyone is waiting for me
Hurry up shine your light my way
Ease my pain
Asleep, I am tired
Die, I will not, I will not, I will not give up

Light, I think I see one
I do see the green light
Green light I saw you
Home, I cannot stop thinking about it
Tonight I will eat and sleep
Home with my family
Oh, I am almost home
Unbeatable am I in tides or darkness
Shore, I see it, I am going faster
Ease on shore, I am home at last

-Brian Coffman -- Waynesville, OH

The Marblehead Lighthouse was built by a stone mason named William Kelly. Through history 15 lighthouse keepers, two whom were women, have tended the beacon. The first keeper was Benajah Wolcott, a Revolutionary veteran. No, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources proudly accepted ownership of the Marblehead Lighthouse tower as Ohio's 73rd state park.

-Brian Coffman -- Waynesville, OH

Marblehead Lighthouse
The lighthouse is a-glow every
night from dawn to daylight
The hard work of the
owners is the heart
of the Marblehead
Lighthouse.

-Carrie Pennington -- Waynesville, OH

Where Elizabeth and John were wed,
Your light shines Bright,
Blue and White,
When I turn right, I see your light,
And I don't have to fight the storm,
Then when I get home,
I feel all cozy and warm.

-Derek Whorton -- Waynesville, OH

Standing tall
all bright and white.
People come
to see your light.
You keep ships safe,
you save people's lives.
You get sailors home safely
to their wives.

-Aaron Presley -- Waynesville, OH

The lighthouse is cool,
the lighthouse is neat,
it helped save shippers
and their skippers.
The hero lighthouse.

-Katie Lewis -- Waynesville, OH
