Not all birds head for the warmer weather in the winter. A bird feeder is a fun and friendly way to bring the year-round feathered residents of Ohio into your backyard.
Materials:
- String
- One darning or embroidery needle
- One large grapefruit
- Cranberries
- Birdseed (and/or unsalted sunflower seeds)
- Plain peanut butter
- Plain popped popcorn (stale works best)
Directions:
Step One. Take the grapefruit and ask your parent or guardian to slice the top of it off. Then remove the insides of the grapefruit till hollow. Place aside once done.
Step Two. Measure and cut 3 pieces of string to be 2 feet (24 inches) in length. For each piece of string tie a knot at one end, then tie the tied end to each tied end of the other pieces of string.
Step Three. Take one piece of string at a time and thread the unknotted end through the needle. Poke the needle through the cranberry and pull the cranberry along the string to the end knot. Add cranberries till there is only four inches of string left on the end. Do not make another knot yet and keep the needle on the last piece of string.
Step Four. Grab the grapefruit and poke the needle with the string full of cranberries through a side near the lip then tie it together. Repeat for each piece of string around the grapefruit.
Step Five. Take a bowl and pour the birdseed and popcorn in. Then mix the peanut butter in. Mix well. Scoop and place the mixture inside the grapefruit till full.
Final Step. Cut a piece of string 6 inches in length and loop it to the top where all three pieces of string meet. Now you can hang your friendly bird feeder on a tree for your grateful feathered friends! |
