Canal Water Sales

The Department sells water from two watered sections of the canal system. On the east side of the state near Akron, water is sold from the Portage Lakes System and the existing watered sections of the Ohio and Erie Canal associated with those lakes. On the west side of the state near the City of St. Marys, water is sold from the Grand Lake St. Marys and the existing watered sections of the Miami and Erie Canal associated with this lake. These water sales are typically handled by a water lease.

Water Supply Storage From Federal Reservoirs

The State owns a water equity in three federally constructed reservoirs in Ohio. At Alum Creek Reservoir located in Delaware County, the State has sold its entire water supply storage allocation of 30 million gallons per day (mgd) to three separate entities. At Caesar Creek Reservoir located in Warren County, the State has contracted seven mgd of its total water supply storage allocation of 37 mgd. Finally at East Fork Reservoir located in Clermont County, the State has a water supply allocation of 37 mgd, of which 20 mgd of that allocation has been contracted.
