ODNR Division of Mineral Resources Management - Oil and Gas

Oil and Gas Well Record Search Definitions

The Division of Mineral Resources Management maintains over 230,000 well records which detail and track the complete history of each and every known oil and gas well in Ohio. Due to the fact that much of the terminology which appears on the well records is of a technical nature, the following brief explanations may assist our "non-technical" audience in understanding the terms which may appear during a well search.

API Well Number
The unique 14-digit American Petroleum Institute number assigned to a well when a permit is issued.
Landowner
Surface owner/or mineral owner of the land where the well is located.
Well No.
Lease number assigned to the well
Owner
Party which has the right to drill the well.
Permit Issued
Date the well was permitted by the Division of Oil and Gas.
Status
County
County where the well is located.
Township
Civil township where the well is located.
Section
An area of one square mile (640 acres) within a township where the well is located. There are generally 36 sections in a township.

Subdivision of a section where the well is located.
Tract
Subdivision within a township where the well is located.
Measured
Measured distance to the well from a permanent land subdivision.
Twp. Qtr.
Township Quarter - subdivision within a township where the well is located.
Quadrangle
U.S. Geological Survey topographic map on which the well is located.
Zone
North or South zone of latitude where the well is located.
Surface Coord. X
"X" plane coordinate of the wellhead (NAD 27 STD).
Y
"Y" plane coordinate of the wellhead.(NAD 27 STD)
Bot Hole Coord X
"X" plane coordinate of the well bottom.(NAD 27 STD)
Y
"Y" plan coordinate of the well bottom.(NAD 27 STD)
Lat
Latitude coordinate system of the wellhead
Long
Longitude coordinate system of the wellhead
GL
Ground level elevation of the well.
DF
Derrick floor elevation. (The derrick is a tapered tower used in the drilling of oil and gas wells as support for the equipment lowered into the well).
KB
Kelly bushing elevation. The kelly bushing is a device on the drilling floor of a rotary drilling rig that turns drill pipe.
LTD
Total depth of the well as recorded by the logging tool.
DTD
Total depth of the well as recorded by the driller.
PB Depth
Plug back depth. (The depth of a well after deeper formation(s) have been plugged.)
Prop TD
Proposed total depth of the well.
Class
Classification of the type of well. View list of well classification codes.
Acres
Amount of land in the drilling unit.
Date Commenced
Date when drilling begins.
Date Completed
Date when drilling is done.
Date PB
Date well was plugged back.
Date Abandoned
Date well was plugged.
TD Formation
Geologic formation at total depth of well.
Prod. Form.
Geologic formation(s) from which oil and/or gas is produced.
IP Natural
Initial daily production before the well is treated or stimulated to increase production.
IP AT
Initial daily production after treatment.
Initial Rock Pressure
Measured bottom hole pressure.
Tool
Type of drilling rig used.
Logging Co.
The company which performs wire line logging of the well. Logging is the process of lowering devices on a wire line into the well to measure the properties of rocks and fluids penetrated by the borehole.
Sample No.
The number assigned to sample cuttings (fragments of rock) from a well.
Log Types
The kinds of wire line logs run on a well. Logging devices are lowered into the well on a wire line to measure the properties or rocks and fluids penetrated by the borehole.
Perforations
The number and depth of perforations in production casing and cement (if present) to allow formation fluids to enter the well bore.
Stimulations
Type of treatment to increase oil and gas production.
Casing Record
Type and amount of casing in the well; amount of cement/clay used to seal formations behind various types of casing.
Formation
Geologic formation penetrated.
Top
Top of the formation.
Bottom
Base of the formation.
Remarks
Comments relative to the formation and contained fluids.
