VOLUNTEER EFFORTS IMPROVE
HOCKING STATE FOREST HORSEMAN’S CAMP

ROCKBRIDGE, OH - A local group of horseback riders recently completed a volunteer work project at Hocking State Forest, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry. Members of Don’s Cowboy Posse, with the assistance of Hocking State Forest staff, installed four manure bins and one steel horse-tie at the horseman’s camp on Saturday, September 9.

“The ODNR Division of Forestry commends these local riders for their donations of labor and equipment to improve facilities at the Hocking State Forest Horseman’s Camp,” said John Dorka, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “The efforts of these and other volunteers in Ohio’s state forests help to improve a vital and treasured natural resource.”

The installation of the manure bins completed a 12-month project to renovate all manure bins at the Hocking State Forest Horseman’s Camp. The volunteer group also installed a new steel pipe horse tie at Indian Head Rock, on a side trail of nearly 40 miles of trails within the state forest. This particular site is a favorite of not only this group, but also many visitors to the trails at Hocking State Forest. The group plans to assist with renovation and replacement of existing horse-ties at the state horseman’s camp, as well as installing future rest area ties.

Another volunteer project is planned for Saturday, September 23 at 8 a.m. for trail maintenance and repair in the Fat Man’s Squeeze site of the Rappelling Area along the Buckeye Trail. This trail rehabilitation project will complete a section of trail maintenance that was started this summer.
