EARTH DAY TO EARTH DAY POSTER CONTEST WINNERS
ANNOUNCED FOR 2002-2003

COLUMBUS, OH -- Twelve Ohio students are winners of the eleventh annual Earth Day to Earth Day Poster Contest sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI).

“This year’s winning posters reflect the artists’ concern for the environment and their ideas for protecting it,” said Michael Canfield, chief of the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. “Conserving natural resources, saving energy and preventing litter are issues we want Ohio students to think about.”

Students were asked to create a color poster illustrating one of the following themes: buying recycled products, recycling, or litter prevention. Teachers across the state judged entries from grades 1-12 and forwarded over 330 local winning entries to ODNR for final selection.

Each winner is awarded a $100 savings bond and recycled-content prizes. Each winner’s school receives $100 from ISRI for classroom activities or supplies.

“ISRI is proud to continue its sponsorship of the popular Earth Day to Earth Day Poster Contest in Ohio,” said Mary Wiard, ISRI representative. “We know that when students learn about the benefits of recycling, buying recycled products and litter prevention, they share their knowledge and enthusiasm with others.

Winning students will be honored at the Take Pride, Ohio! Awards luncheon on April 4 in Columbus.

The winning posters were used to create a full-color wall poster with a "trash timeline" and calendar on the reverse side. The calendars will be distributed through local recycling and litter prevention offices in celebration of Earth Day on April 22 and Take Pride, Ohio! Month in April.
