Seasonal Hiring Opportunities

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) utilizes seasonal employees through-out the year to meet the operational requirements of the various Divisions and Offices that make-up ODNR. These positions are located statewide (e.g., State Parks including campgrounds & beaches, State Forests, including the state nursery, Wildlife Areas & Fish Hatcheries and the ODNR Central Office Complex in Columbus). These positions include Natural Resources Aides and Specialists, Lifeguards and College Interns. All positions are unclassified (i.e., no civil service or collective bargaining rights), are seasonal in nature (work a specified period of time) and do not earn benefits.

The following is a brief description of the duties performed by each postion type, please keep in mind that these duties are illustrative in nature, and may vary from ODNR Division to Division and even State Park to State Park.

Natural Resources Specialist ($7.40/hr):
DUTIES: Perform Routine Administrative and/or Clerical Tasks (e.g., conduct research, report writing, answer public inquiries, customer service, typing, data entry into a personal computer, balance receipts, work in camp store); Serve as Lead Worker over other seasonal employees (e.g., assign tasks, inspect completed work, teach use of hand and/or power equipment and tools); Performs Unskilled Conservation Work (e.g., Forestry State Nursery – counts and removes damaged seedlings, pulls seedlings from seed beds, prepares seedlings for shipment (e.g., bundles, packages, loads/unloads trucks), performs nursery maintenance (e.g., pull weeds, transplant seedlings); operates vehicles; variable hours and shifts (including holidays & weekends). Collects data, operates check stations, assists permanent staff in wildlife/fisheries management practices such as species collection, banding, land management, etc.; maintenance of shooting range, etc.

Lifeguard (hourly rate varies):
DUTIES: Rescues swimmers in distress, enters water to swim to potential drowning victim, uses rescue equipment (e.g., rescue tube; rescue board; canoe) to tow/pull victim to safety, & performs emergency first aid (e.g., cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; holds compress to bleeding area; covers victim). Guards designated swimming area against drowning & related accidents; advises public of pertinent provisions of Ohio revised code & Ohio Department Of Natural Resources, Parks & Recreation Division rules & regulations; requests public comply with laws, rules & regulations; summons park officer for enforcement of rules & regulations; clears swimming area & coordinates beach patrons into human chain to search designated swimming areas & locate underwater drowning victims. Completes waterfront incident report forms; inspects safety equipment for needed repairs; maintains beach area (e.g., picks up litter; empties trash containers; checks restrooms; checks vending machines; mows grass; paints surfaces).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: American Red Cross lifeguard training certificate or American Red Cross lifeguard training certificate 2, YMCA – National YMCA lifeguard certificate, Boy Scouts Of America - BSA lifeguard certificate or BSA aquatic instructor certificate, Ellis & Associates - national pool & watermark lifeguard training certificate, or nationally recognized equivalent; CPR (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificate. If required to work longer than four months, the final applicant accepted for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test result will not be offered employment, per Section 3719.01 & 3719.41 of Ohio revised code.

College Intern (hourly rate varies):
DUTIES: Duties and responsibilities will vary based on postion and experience. The department offers both paid and unpaid internship opportunities.

Conservation Worker ($12.99/hr):

DUTIES: Collect biological and human dimensions information via angler interviews; enters data. Must be able to identify sport fish, operate a boat and provide own transportation.

Ohio Woodland Job Corp - Conservation Worker ($13.44):

DUTIES: Performs unskilled conservation work: (e.g., cuts grapevines & undesirable trees, mixes & applies herbicides, identifies, treats and removes invasive species, cuts down & bucks trees into logs, cuts firewood); performs road & bridge maintenance (e.g., cleans ditches, headers & culverts, digs trenches, shovels gravel, sets & paints signs, paints & repairs bridges); operates equipment & vehicles (e.g., ATV, pickup trucks, lawn & farm tractors) in maintaining forest trails & to travel between forests; operates chainsaws & other power & hand tools; marks & maintains forest boundaries; Cleans, paints & repairs buildings & grounds maintenance: maintains recreational facilities & areas, offices, & shops (e.g., mows grass, clears brush, paints signs & buildings, clears & marks trails, picks up and hauls trash, sets posts, performs wildfire support as directed within training & physical capabilities (e.g., carries out initial fire attack, constructs fire line); operates fire equipment & vehicles (e.g., 4-wheel drive fire trucks, water pumps), in order to operate a state owned vehicle, must show proof of valid driver’s license, Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, vehicles, & tools (e.g., changes oil & filters, makes minor body repairs, changes tires, cleans & washes vehicles & tractors), Prepares & maintains records & reports, uses personal computer to complete reports (e.g. activity reports; vehicle & equipment reports), maintains records (e.g. vehicle & equipment, etc.), inventories forest supplies, participates in training programs (e.g. fire, chainsaw, pesticide applicators, etc.).

Locations: Scioto Trail State Forest (Ross County), Shawnee State Forest (Scioto County), Zaleski State Forest (Vinton County), Hocking State Forest (Hocking County), Pike State Forest (Pike County) and Maumee State Forest (Fulton County)
