Wildflower Hikes at Goll Woods State Nature Preserve

Events part of the family-friendly Natural Areas Discovery Series

ARCHBOLD, OH - Spring provides a variety of pastel blooms in Ohio's woodlands. Visitors are invited to join one of two wildflower hikes at Goll Woods State Nature Preserve, part of the Natural Areas Discovery Series, on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Dozens of lovely spring ephemerals dot the forest floor at Goll Woods including trillium, bloodroot, Dutchman's breeches, harbinger of spring, hepatica, mayapple, Virginia waterleaf, wild blue phlox, trout lily and many others. This easy-paced, naturalist led walk is perfect for the whole family.

Goll Woods State Nature Preserve protects one of the least disturbed woodlands in northwestern Ohio. This 321-acre site exemplifies the "Black Swamp" forest, which once covered a vast area southwest of Lake Erie. The preserve harbors giant bur oaks and exceptionally large white oaks, chinquapin oaks and cottonwoods. For more information on the Goll Woods event, call 419-445-1775.

Sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, the Natural Areas Discovery Series features guided hikes, interpretive activities and outdoor programs. The next events will be held on Saturday, May 2 at Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve in Licking County and Saturday, May 9 at Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve in Ottawa County.

Children who hike with their families during the special events and throughout the year can receive credit towards the ODNR Explore the Outdoors Hike a Trail activity. Explore the Outdoors is a hands-on family program that gives Ohio children the opportunity to reunite with nature, improve their physical and emotional health and discover the rewards of becoming environmental stewards. Program information and downloadable activity guides can be found at www.exploretheoutdoorsohio.com.
