In 1996 the Ohio Geological Survey published a pioneering report that used then-new computer methods to assess the coal resources in the Bethesda 7.5-minute quadrangle in Belmont County. The coal-resource estimates for the quadrangle were calculated by using geographic-information-system (GIS) software and coal data in the files of the Survey. This methodology allows the data to be used in future regional studies of coal availability and will be applied to other quadrangles by Survey geologists.
Report of Investigations No. 145 is part of a cooperative program with the U.S. Geological Survey to assess the nation's coal resources. To learn more about the methodology of the coal availability mapping, click here.
