Chief Thomas J. Serenko, Ph.D.
Dr. Tom Serenko became Division Chief on September 26, 2012. He has been a professional geologist for more than 25 years. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, he holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from Youngstown State University and a master’s degree from the Colorado School of Mines. He earned his doctorate in geology from Imperial College, London, United Kingdom.
Tom previously has worked as a geologist in Chile, Switzerland, and Tajikistan. Additionally, his research has been published in several major industry journals. He also has worked as a mining and exploration manager at Southern Clay Products, Inc. in Gonzales, Texas. Most recently, Tom was resource manager at Nevada Cement Company in Fernley, Nevada, where he managed a 700,000 ton/year limestone quarry and a 50,000 ton/year clay crusher. His duties there included overseeing all permitting and environmental compliance, safety, mine development, mine design and exploration.
