Measured Stratigraphic Sections
and Core Descriptions

Over 17,000 stratigraphic sections measured in the field and over 2,500 descriptions of cores drilled by the Survey or made available from other agencies or from industry are on open file in the Geologic Records Center of the Geological Survey. These sections and descriptions contain information on the types and thicknesses of rocks encountered and may be consulted by anyone interested in the detailed geology of local areas. The number and distribution of stratigraphic sections in a given area are dependent upon the amount of geological investigation which has been carried out in the area. In some counties, the number of measured sections can exceed 50 per township; in other counties there may be no sections available for some townships. Stratigraphic sections and core descriptions are located by file reference number on quadrangle maps in the Geologic Records Center of the Survey. The sections and descriptions may be copied at a cost of 25 cents per page. Some sections and descriptions occupy only part of a page; others may be several pages in length.
