Before the SeismoGraf application can be used to record seismograms some parameters within the software need to be configured. The ResEdit application will be used to customize the SeismoGraf application. ResEdit is on the CD ROM containing the SeismoGraf System software in the folder labeled "Utilities." Copy ResEdit from the CD Rom to the xxxx_Station folder on the Macintosh HD.
Before You Start
Before starting with ResEdit it is good practice to make a duplicate copy of the SeismoGraf software.
Making a copy of SeismoGraf
- Go to the folder on the Macintosh Hard Drive where "SeismoGraf" resides.
- High light "SeismoGraf" with single click only.
- Go to the top line menu and click "File."
- Click "Duplicate."
Now there should be a second SeismoGraf application named "SeismoGraf Copy" this will be the version to customize with ResEdit.
Customizing SeismoGraf Copy
- Start ResEdit.
- Click on the ResEdit logo that pops up.
- A window showing the items on the desktop should open up.
- High light "Macintosh HD" and click "Open."
- A window showing the contents of the "Macintosh HD" should be in view.
- Scroll to the station folder where "SeismoGraf Copy" resides.
- High light the folder and click "Open."
- The contents of the station folder should be in view in the new window.
- High light "SeismoGraf Copy" and click "Open."
- A window should open up with a bunch of icons.
- Go to the icon named "STR#" and double click.
- "setTraceParams" is where the station ID is set. double click to open.
- String 1 should be named OhioSeis.
- The Strings 2-4 should be named with the station ID (eg. BCSO).
- When done close window.
- "stationLoc" is where Latitiude, Longitude, and elevation of the station are entered.
- Double click "stationLoc."
- String 2 is the Latitude of the station in decimal degrees to three significant digits (eg. 41.564).
- String 3 is the Longitude of the station in decimal degrees to three significant digits and preceeded by a minus sign (eg. -82.232).
- String 4 is the elevation of the station in meters.
- When done close window.
- "instramentParams" is where the A-to-D Board and PCI slot configurations are set.
- Double click "instramentParams."
- String 13 identifies the type of A-to-D board, "L" for the 12-bit board and "X" for the 16-bit board.
- String 15 is the A-to-D board slot number.
Note: Typical configarations are: beige G3 slot #1; Blueberry G3, G4 Slot #2. If the PCI slot number is not known use the National Instruments (NI-DAQ) control panel to see which PCI slot the A-to-D board resides. With the NI-DAQ control panel open, look under "Devices" in the drop down menu. The slot number will follow the text field named "Devices:"
- When done close window.
- Close "STR#" window.
- Close "SeismoGraf Copy" window.
- An alert box should pop up asking "Save SeismoGraf Copy before closing?"
- Click "Yes."
SeismoGraf is now customized for the seismic station.
If everything was done correctly in ResEdit "Trash" or move to another folder the old SeismoGraph application. Then rename "SeismoGraf Copy" to "SeismoGraf." New alias' for "SeismoGraf" should also be made.
