This catalog lists all known earthquakes that were felt or had instrumental magnitudes greater than 2.0 and that are thought to have had epicenters within Ohio's borders, including the area beneath Lake Erie. In addition, The catalog includes two additional lists: (1) felt or greater-than-2.0-magnitude earthquakes in Ohio's border regions (between 38.0° and 43.0° N latitude and 80.0° and 85.5° W longitude), and (2) earthquakes felt in Ohio but having epicenters beyond the border regions.
Instrumental magnitudes and locations did not commonly become available for Ohio earthquakes until the 1970's and have been intermittent until 1999, when the Ohio Seismic Network was established. Historic, pre-instrumental earthquakes have been documented by a number of researchers during a long period of time from newspaper accounts, government and university records, and a variety of historical sources. The majority of the historical events in the following catalog are from the report by Armbruster and Seeber (1991) published by the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER), with additions from John G. Armbruster and from the files of the Ohio Division of Geological Survey. It must be emphasized that locations and magnitudes for historical events may vary widely in their accuracy, especially for smaller events, which may have been noted in only one newspaper account. It is probable that many small, historic earthquakes in Ohio remain undiscovered. The Ohio Division of Geological Survey welcomes contributions of historic Ohio earthquake accounts from individuals who may discover them during other research.
