A small earthquake occurred beneath Lake Erie about 10 miles offshore from Painesville on Saturday evening about 8:07 p.m. Several small earthquakes have been detected in this general area since the availability of seismograph stations in Ohio and adjacent areas. This earthquake was detected by northern stations of the Ohio Seismic Network and Ontario stations of the Geological Survey of Canada and Southern Ontario Seismic Network. No damage was reported. Individuals who felt this event are encouraged to fill out a short form. This information contributes to the understanding of seismic risk in Ohio. Commonly, people feel a sharp vibration or jolt or hear a booming or rumbling sound from small earthquakes. Many people do not recognize these phenomena as an earthquake.
