Washington Hawthorn - Crataegus phaenopyrum
Columbus Planted: 1957
4955 Atwater Site: 6' Tree Lawn

1971 Comments:
This is in a suburban area with a deep setback of the houses. These small trees are out of scale with the area because of their size and formal character. They have been limbed up to prevent any interference with traffic, but the formality is somewhat objectionable aesthetically. A larger tree would have been more effective since there are no overhead utility lines. Considering that these trees were planted in 1957, they are still small.

1997 Comments:
None of the original plants in the study, and only one of the estimated 20 plants on the entire street remain. That one tree is about 5" in diameter. It has quite a bit of cedar quince rust. In a number of instances, the trees planted in the lawn panels became canopy trees and helped kill other species such as Washington Hawthorns.

Five percent of the overall planting survived (1 of 20 trees).
1997 data on the table are based on one tree.
