Mapping Ohio’s glacial deposits is a high priority for the Ohio Geological Survey. One major goal has been a systematic, reconnaissance-style, three-dimensional mapping of the glacial geology of the entire state, which has led to creation of the surficial geology (SG-2) map series. The SG-2 maps are based upon USGS 30 X 60-minute quadrangles and compiled at a scale of 1:100,000. Click here for a status map with links to download each map PDF.
These maps feature a network of polygons, labeled to identify the “stack” of materials found in each polygon, such as glacial till, sand and gravel, and fine-grained lacustrine (lake-derived) deposits. Number codes give the relative thickness of each unit in each stack. Each SG-2 map includes a detailed legend that explains the construction, usage, and characteristics of that particular map.

Each SG-2 series map includes a cross section of a hypothetical stack unit map, illustrating thickness and mapping conventions, and lithologic-unit descriptions for explanation of symbols. Click the image for more information and to enlarge.

All SG-2 maps also contain a complete list of references. A number of data sources were used to compile SG-2 maps; however, they are considered to be in draft or open-file status and are subject to updates or revisions at any time. Boundaries between adjoining quadrangles may contain irregularities. If you have questions about a particular map, or a particular area of a map, please contact a staff geologist. The Ohio Geological Survey is particularly interested in new information or data for areas that would indicate the mapping is inaccurate.
Surficial maps have a wide variety of uses and prospective audiences, including local planners, environmental and geotechnical engineers and consultants, the aggregate industry, ground-water specialists, and educators. The maps are intended to provide a regional perspective and should not be used for site-specific work.
SG-2 maps are currently available as high-resolution, Adobe Acrobat® PDF documents. Large-scale print-outs of the maps at 1:100,000 scale may be purchased from the Geologic Records Center for $15 plus tax and shipping.
The GIS layers for SG-2 maps currently are not available since they are constantly changing with current mapping areas added and quadrangle borders reviewed and modified.
