Tours, Lectures, and Workshops

Guided tours of the H. R. Collins Laboratory (HRCL) and lectures about the geology and fossils of Ohio are available upon request. Tours for individuals and groups up to 40 are conducted during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday–Friday) and generally last about an hour. After-hours/weekend tours and lectures are generally discouraged, but such requests may be granted after review on a case-by-case basis.

Each tour will provide participants with information about one of Ohio’s most unique libraries—a library of miles and miles of rocks that tell the story of the geology buried deep beneath Ohio’s landscape. Division of Geological Survey geologists are available to lead each tour and answer questions concerning the HRCL and the geology and fossils of Ohio. Please contact Gregory A. Schumacher at greg.schumacher@dnr.state.oh.us or (740) 548-7348, ext. 25 to schedule a tour or lecture.

Each year the HRCL will hold a limited number of geologic workshops for students, faculty, industry, and consultants. Workshop topics will be advertised on the Division of Geological Survey website and other media outlets.

Walk-in Visitors

Walk-in visitors are always welcome. However, visitors planning to examine or sample the collections housed at the HRCL should schedule an appointment one to two weeks prior to their arrival. Please take a moment to review our Core-Use and Cutting-Use Policies. To schedule a visit, please send a brief e-mail to Gregory A. Schumacher, greg.schumacher@dnr.state.oh.us, describing the following:

·        Project.
·        Cores, samples, and collections to be examined.
·        Duration of study.
·        Anticipated reports or publications.
·        Mailing and e-mailing addresses.
·        Telephone number for each investigator.

Written requests also may be submitted to Gregory A. Schumacher, ODNR Division of Geological Survey, H. R. Collins Laboratory, 3307 South Old State Road, Delaware, Ohio, 43015-7635. For additional information and questions, please contact Gregory Schumacher at (740) 548-7348, ext. 25.
