Learning About Lake Erie

Lake Erie Literacy Lessons are featured in Kidsville News:
For 2.5 years, this free monthly newspaper featured a full-page story teaching the Lake Erie Literacy Principles and Concepts. As of August 2012, the newspaper is no longer published.

However, the stories that were featured in the paper are below. Each Lake Erie Lessons is written as a conversation between with Truman the Kidsville News Dragon.

In March 2011, the series received the Publisher's Award for Best Article or Series of Articles showing a Kidsville News publication promoting local educational content enrichment. (read press release)

Biological means of, relating to, caused by, or affecting life or living organisms
Carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through use of fossil fuels such as gas, oil and coal for which are used for electricity, heating, transportation etc.
Compost pile is a heap of manure and vegetation and other organic residues that are decaying to become compost – a mixture of decaying organic matter, as from leaves and manure, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients.

Herbicides are substance that is toxic to plants and used to destroy or inhibit unwanted plant growth.
Microscopic things are very small or fine, invisible or indistinguishable without the use of a microscope.
Pesticides are substances or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest. Pesticides are a chemical that is used to kill animals or insects that damage plants or crops.
Phosphorus is a nonmetallic element that of the nitrogen family that occurs commonly in inorganic phosphate rocks and as organic phosphates in all living cells. It occurs widely especially as phosphates. Phosphorus is An essential element in the diet and a major component of bone. Phosphorus is also found in the blood, muscles, nerves, and teeth. It is a component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy source in the body.
