2012 UPDATE

The bald eagle occurs in marshes, swamps and river systems throughout Ohio. Eagles have continued to recover from a low of 4 breeding pairs in 1979. The number of known breeding pairs in 2011 was 194, and eagle production continued to be high with an estimated 254 young. In 2012, the number of known breeding pairs increased 10% to an estimated 213 which produced an estimated 321 young. Expansion of nesting pairs continues along many inland watersheds. Wintering bald eagles are possible anywhere in the state but are most commonly observed near open water.
