2008 OHIO MINING ACTIVITIES IN BRIEF
Reports were filed in 2008 for 141 coal-mining operations, including 5 mines with their own coal-washing facilities. Coal production was reported from 86 of these operations. Reports also were filed for 15 separate coal-washing plants and associated facilities. Of 631 industrial-mineral-mining operations known to be operating in 2008, 423 operations were active. A total of 34 mines reported production of multiple mineral commodities. Of this total, 26 mines reported production of multiple industrial minerals; 3 mines reported production of multiple industrial minerals and coal; 5 mines reported production of coal and one industrial mineral. There were 823 new wells completed for oil and gas in 2008, of which 768 were productive and 55 were dry.
The total value* of coal was $1,025,832,946 in 2008; the value of oil and gas was $1,350,075,791; and the total value* of all nonfuel industrial minerals was $912,964,430 in 2008.

* Includes reported and estimated values. Some operations reporting sales did not report a value for those sales. A countywide- or statewide-average price per ton was calculated for each industrial mineral commodity based on sales for which the value was reported. A countywide average price per ton was calculated for coal based on (1) sales for which the value was reported and (2) method of production. These calculated averages were used to estimate the value of the sales for which the actual values were not reported. |
