Buckeye Big Buck Club

Who We Are

Hunter with buckHistory of the club: Ohio's unique and original Buckeye Big Buck Club was founded in 1957 to bring more trophy quality deer heads to public attention. It was founded by Merrill C. Gilfillan, Ohio Department of Natural Resources writer and former deer biologist for the DOW. The formal organization was completed after the first Big Buck awards dinner in Columbus in February, 1958.

Purposes of the organization are to stimulate appreciation of the eastern white-tailed deer in Ohio, to encourage trophy hunting by hunters, to establish and maintain a permanent record of Ohio trophy deer, and to foster sound sportsmanship among Ohio's deer hunters. Each year the Club honors hunters who harvest "typical" deer which meet the minimum 140 scoring requirement and "non-typical" Ohio deer meeting a minimum 160 scoring requirement. Scores are determined by a series of measurements involving the symmetrical length and circumference of antler branches and the inside space or spread of the antlers.

Many states have copied the Big Buck Club system to achieve the same results which Ohio has enjoyed. The Buckeye Big Buck Club has worked in Ohio, as is shown by the many fine trophy deer which are recognized each year.
