WEST UNION, OH – Deer hunters will again have access to prime deer hunting land at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve in Adams County for the 2011-2012 hunting season. The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC), and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife opened land to deer hunting by permit only in 2006. New this season hunters must attend an informational meeting prior to the season to obtain The Edge of Appalachia hunting permits.

AKRON, OH- Youth dove hunting will be permitted on portions of the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Refuge by permit for the 2011-2012 season. Access to this portion of the property is restricted to permit-only hunting. The refuge is not open to the public otherwise.

AKRON, OH – Young anglers still have two more weekends including Labor Day to enjoy the Division of Wildlife’s youth fishing area in the Portage Lakes of Akron. Occupying the grounds of the old Akron fish hatchery, the youth fishing ponds are open to anglers 15 and under through the Labor Day holiday on September 5. Equipment, bait, and assistance are provided at no charge thanks to the purchases of Ohio fishing licenses and federal contributions from the Sportfish Restoration Fund.

AKRON, OH – The Ohio Division of Wildlife and the City of Akron invites waterfowl hunters to participate in a special drawing on Thursday, September 15, 2011 for hunting at LaDue Reservoir. Registration at the Geauga County Fairgrounds will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the drawing will follow promptly at 6:00 p.m. There is no fee for applying. Hunters will place registration cards in a drum, names will be drawn for available dates and blinds, and first drawn will receive first choice.

The Lake Erie watersnake, a federally threatened and state endangered species, is being removed from the federal government’s list of threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. This reptile of has one of the smallest geographic distributions of any North American vertebrate and is found almost exclusively on the Lake Erie Islands. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife will proceed to down-list the species from state endangered to state threatened.

XENIA, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife will again hold controlled hunts on Fallsville, Indian Creek, Bott, Spring Valley, and Rush Run Wildlife Areas by permit only Sept. 1 and 2, 2011. These areas will be open to all other dove hunters after the first 2 days of the season. Youth priority hunts will take place at St. Marys Fish Hatchery. Accommodations will be provided to handicapped dove hunters that are selected for the controlled dove hunts. They should contact the staff at the wildlife areas.

COLUMBUS, OH – Yearling and fingerling blue catfish will be stocked into Hoover Reservoir for the first time in the fall of 2011, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. This stocking effort is part of a pilot project conducted by the division’s Inland Fisheries Research Unit to determine if stocking blue catfish can create trophy fisheries in Ohio reservoirs.

COLUMBUS, OH – Young peregrine falcons across Ohio have fledged, marking the end of the 2011 nesting season. There were 39 sites with territorial pairs, of which 34 nests produced eggs. There were an additional five sites with single peregrines present.
