COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife received five national communications awards. The communication efforts were produced over the past year. The awards were received from the Association for Conservation Information (ACI) at the organization's annual conference last week in Nashville, Tennessee. More than 300 entries were submitted by state, federal, and Canadian wildlife conservation, parks, and natural resource agencies for consideration in 24 different categories.

Biologists with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife count a record high of 184 nests in the state this year, the twenty-first consecutive year that the state's breeding bald eagle population increased.

MINERVA, OH – Minerva Cheese factory accidentally released whey, a milky substance, into Sandy Creek between Minerva and Malvern, which temporarily depleted oxygen levels and killed over 5,400 fish according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife. The accident occurred on June 14th and affected a 1.5 mile stretch downstream from the Minerva Wastewater Treatment Plant.

COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has confirmed that viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHSv), a virus that causes disease in fish but does not pose any threat to public health, was confirmed present in muskellunge sampled during routine egg collection in Clear Fork Reservoir in late April. The reservoir is located in Richland and Morrow counties.

COLUMBUS, OH - Lake Erie anglers fishing in Ohio waters west of Huron are reminded that the 30-fish daily bag limit for yellow perch is reduced to 25 fish, effective July 1. The reduction, approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council in March, is in response to declining yellow perch stocks in western Lake Erie, generally attributed to poor spawning.
