Driving Directions
Take State Route 2 West to the Baumhart Road exit.
Turn left (south) off of the exit ramp onto Baumhart Road.
Take Baumhart to North Ridge Road. Turn right onto
North Ridge Road, which will take you to the park
entrance.

What to Look For
The centerpiece of the park is the scenic Vermilion River, which bisects the reservation. The best natural area – and birding – is in the Bacon Woods unit, which makes up the park’s west side. The most interesting birding is in spring and fall migration, and during the breeding season. Nearly 100 nesting species have been confirmed, including Bald Eagle, both cuckoos, Cliff Swallow, and Brown Creeper. Thirteen species of warblers breed locally, including Louisiana Waterthrush, Blue-winged, Prothonotary, Hooded, Cerulean, Chestnut-sided, Yellow-throated, and Prairie warblers, American Redstart, and Yellow-breasted Chat. |

Natural Features
Impressive shale cliffs and clayey bluffs border the Vermilion River in places, providing incredible scenery. The bluffs and steep slopes along the stream support botanical rarities such as round-leaved dogwood (Cornus rugosa), small fringed gentian (Gentianopsis procera), cow-wheat (Melampyrum lineare), and Canada buffalo-berry (Shepherdia canadensis). |
