What to Look For
At only one acre in size, Vermilion Main Street Beach is a tiny park, but it offers excellent vistas of Lake Erie. Shorebirds sometimes drop in on the 300-foot long sand beach, which is also often used by roosting gulls. Just to the east is the mouth of the Vermilion River, and long jetties extend into Lake Erie at this point. There are often hundreds or thousands of gulls perched on these jetties, and their ranks often include many Great Black-backed Gulls. This is a good spot to watch migrant waterfowl in late fall and early winter. Scores of Red-breasted Mergansers frequent the area, and scoters are often seen. Large numbers of Bonaparte’s Gulls also occur at this time, and finding a Parasitic or Pomarine Jaeger harassing the gulls is always a possibility. |
