Findley State Park
The park’s 838 acres is mostly forested and supports an excellent diversity of woodland breeding birds. Noteworthy nesters include the Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Veery, nine species of warblers, Scarlet Tanager, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Driving Directions
Take I-480 West to State Route 10 West. Go west on
US Route 20 to State Route 58. Take State Route 58
south for ten miles. Park is 2.5 miles south of Wellington
on east side of the road.

What To Look For
The park’s 838 acres is mostly forested and supports an excellent diversity of woodland breeding birds. Noteworthy nesters include the Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Veery, nine species of warblers, Scarlet Tanager, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. A nearly 100-acre lake in the center of the park often attracts loons and various diving ducks in migration. Mature pine plantations sometimes lure boreal irruptive species in winter, including Red-breasted Nuthatch, Pine Siskin, and both crossbills. The park’s woodlands can be fabulous in May and September for songbird migration. |

Noteworthy Rarities
The most famous rare bird was a Varied Thrush that visited feeders within the park in the winter of 1979-80. It was one of Ohio’s first records of this western species, and ended up being collected by ornithologist Milton B. Trautman. |

Natural Features
From November through March, an excellent mini-loop involves driving back roads from Findley State Park to Oberlin Reservoir, or vice-versa. From the park, head north on State Route 58 and turn east on Jones Road, then north on West Road. Follow West Road to Webster Road, and head west for a short distance, then north again on West Road (it jogs slightly at Webster). Follow West Road to its junction with Parsons Road; Oberlin Reservoir will be on your right. Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk, Lapland Longspur, Snow Bunting, and Horned Lark are often seen along these roads. You will also pass Caley Reservation, a Lorain County Metropark, on West Road between Webster Road and State Route 303. Long-eared Owls sometimes form winter roosts in pines at this park. |
