What To Look For
Columbia Reservation was opened to the public in 2003, and its 409 acres feature approximately 285 acres of constructed wetlands. Well-maintained paths provide easy access and excellent viewing of the various wetlands. Low-lying brushy fields and older-growth woodlands provides habitat for a diversity of breeding birds as well as many migrant species. Nesters include Hooded Merganser, Green Heron, Virginia Rail, Sora, both cuckoos, six species of flycatchers, Prothonotary Warbler, and Orchard Oriole. Good numbers and diversity of waterfowl can stop in spring migration, and depending on water levels, late summer and fall can produce good shorebirding. |

Noteworthy Rarities
Columbia Reservation got on the birding community’s radar in a big way in May 2010 when park manager Linda Paull discovered a Purple Gallinule in one of the wetlands. The bird was present for much of the month, and over 2,000 people came to see it. As more birders visit this relatively new park, other unusual finds will no doubt be made. |
