Lake Erie is a powerful force, don't underestimate it! Always leave port with operational safety, navigational, and communications equipment. This means life jackets, flares, lights, compass and marine radio (even a cellular phone) in good working order. Know and obey the marine "rules of the road:" Visit the ODNR-Watercraft for more information. Don't zoom full throttle into a pack of fishing boats; it can spook the fish.
Use the Web to get the latest conditions via computer models! NOAA provides graphic models of lake and weather conditions. Michigan State University posts latest satellite imagery models of Lake Erie water temperatures on their Web site. Lake Erie satellite pictures are available in real-time daily from NOAA.
