LOCATION
New Lyme Lake is situated approximately 1 mile east of New Lyme off of State Route 6 in Ashtabula County.

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
New Lyme Lake was constructed in 1989 and filled in 1990. This lake was created because there was a need to obtain a large amount of earth for “capping” a former contaminant site at another location. This lake is largely surrounded by a wooded area. The maximum depth is 12 feet. This lake is somewhat unique in that there are a series of finger-like channels associated with it. This lake is 43 acres in size. Boats are allowed, but only electric motors are permitted to be used. New Lyme Lake is part of
New Lyme Wildlife Area and is owned by the Division of Wildlife.

FISHES OF INTEREST TO ANGLERS
Fish species that are found in New Lyme Lake include largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. These species were initially stocked in 1990. Triploid (i.e. effectively sterile) grass carp were stocked in 1998 to control overabundant aquatic vegetation. Channel catfish are stocked in even-numbered years, since they typically do not reproduce successfully in smaller impoundments.

METHODS OF FISHING AND BEST FISHING SITES
Largemouth bass and bluegill can be captured close to shore, especially during the spring and again in the fall. Spinner baits, surface lures, and plastic worms all are good choices for largemouth bass. Waxworms, maggots, or small worms will usually entice the bluegill to bite. A small hook (# 10 or smaller) is the best bet for successful bluegill fishing. Channel catfish can be captured relatively close to shore from spring through fall. Shrimp, night crawlers, or chicken liver are preferred baits for channel catfish. A sliding sinker rig, using a swivel to keep the weight from hitting the hook (such as what would be used for fishing for bass with plastic worms) will work well. A # 4 hook is a preferred size to use for catfish.
