| What are Americans Thinking and Doing About Climate Change? |
To gain a better understanding of what American adults are thinking, feeling and doing about climate change, in May and June 2007 researchers surveyed a nationally representative sample of approximately 12,000 adults. In July and August of that year they surveyed approximately 1,000 of their children, giving them the first-ever American household survey (i.e., parent and child) on climate change. |

| George Mason University and the Woodrow Wilson Center to Host Enhancing Public Engagement in Climate Change: The 2011 Climate Change Communicators of the Year on June 8, 2011 in Washington, D.C. |
Recent social science research has shown that Americans have low levels of climate literacy, and that public engagement in the issue may be insufficient to sustain the serious public dialogue needed to make thoughtful decisions about how our communities, states, and nation should respond to the threat. The 2011 Climate Change Communicators of the Year will share their thoughts about how public engagement in climate change can be enhanced. |

This Web site summarizes plans and reports produced by the Great Lakes Regional Water Program, a partnership among the Land-Grant institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, along with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Through a grant from the NIFA National Integrated Water Quality Program that increases our ability to work across state lines, the consortium delivers and shares research, education, and outreach programs that either lead directly to cleaner water, or increase the capacity of people to manage water resources. Recent efforts include several initiatives on climate change impacts and public understanding. |

| Responding to Climate Change. The Need for an Integral Approach |
by Karen O’Brien. Climate change is not simply an environmental problem that can be addressed by regulating greenhouse gas emissions. It is about human development, social justice, equity, and human rights. It is about human security and the capacity of individuals and communities to respond to threats to their social, environmental, and human rights. “It is about people developing the capabilities that empower them to make choices and to lead lives that they value” (UNDP, 2007, p. 7).
