A brief history:

On March 6, 1840, Ottawa County was created out of 225-square miles of land – a majority of which was part of the Great Black Swamp. Residents took the Native American word for “trader” as the county’s name.

Ottawa County was originally part of territory set aside for Ohio’s Native American people by the Treaty of Greenville. During the War of 1812, the Battle of Lake Erie occurred off the coast in waters near the present-day Bass islands. At that time, the islands of South Bass, Middle Bass and North Bass were named Bass Island, Isle des Fleures and Isle St. George, respectively. The county’s Johnson’s Island served as a prisoner of war camp during the American Civil War. The county is also home of Camp Perry, an Ohio National Guard training base.

The county includes seven villages and twelve townships.

Ottawa County is 95 percent rural and five percent urban. The county is a major tourist destination with visitors pursuing boating, fishing, visiting the Lake Erie Islands and other recreational activities. Located at the eastern tip of the Marblehead peninsula, the Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Ohio and is the oldest continually operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
