A brief history:

Lorain County was formed December 26, 1822, from portions of Huron, Medina and Cuyahoga counties which were originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The county’s 493 square miles were settled by people attracted to jobs in industries such as shipbuilding, steelmaking and fishing.

In the later part of the 20th century, the county’s population grew dramatically. Residents of nearby Cleveland in Cuyahoga County moved west to Lorain and surrounding counties. However, today Lorain County is still overwhelmingly rural, with only seven percent of the county deemed to be urban. Most residents earn their living by working in manufacturing, sales or service positions. Farming ranks eighth. Some county residents also earn their living on Lake Erie.

Elyria is the county seat and the second largest community in the county. The coastal city of Lorain is the largest.

The county is named for the Lorraine region of France. Many of the county’s earliest European settlers were abolitionists. Oberlin College, in the city so named, was the first institution of higher education in the United States to admit women and African Americans into the same classes as white men.
